To answer those who asked, yes, I made the cake for Deer's birthday. I wish I would have tinted the blue just a little more, so the skates would have stood out.
On their birthdays, my kids get to tell me what they want for a cake. We work together (for reality's sake) to come up with their "dream" cake.
Drum usually has more of a struggle, as his favorite cake is cheesecake. Who wants to cover that with frosting?! So, we have put on a well-washed toy (Star Wars figure or now, airplanes) and candle to get the idea across. One year he had a kid birthday party and a family birthday party. He got to have a frosted cake AND his cheesecake. He was happy! :-)
I used to do everything with frosting, and then I discovered, a person can do a ton with candy. So much simpler! But, occasionally, I still do something drawn or out of frosting.
We have also tried a homemade ice-cream cake for some summer birthdays. Very tasty!! They love getting to pick out the ice-cream and cookies to make it. I use a spring-form pan. They don't get much in the way of decorations, but they like it enough to have it again. I like getting to make it ahead of time, and not doing all the detailed decorating. Having 7 kids meant alot of birthdays, and my creative streak (and energy level) was puttering out.
Over the years I've made a candy train, dolls, a teddy bear beach party, tractor in the fields, a floppy hat with ribbon, a bike, flowers, cats, teddy bears, horses heads, etc. I really liked the hat with the wire ribbon and small bird in the bow. The beach party was intricate, and the train was a child's dream.
What was the best birthday cake you've made? Do you have a birthday cake tradition you'd like to share? Comment to enter a drawing for a big candy bar (since we are talking sweets). :-)

I've made LOTS of family birthday cakes myself, probably my favorite was one I made for my oldest son's 12th birthday. It looked exactly like a deep-dish pan pizza! I don't want the candy bar though...that would be a bit too tempting for me, I just wanted to let you know that I have many shaped cake pans that you are welcome to borrow any time you want.
YAY!! A wonderful contest :) One year I made my mom a boxed (shhhh) birthday cake that turned out... actually quite dry... BUT the frosting was delightful if I do say so myself because it was homemade from an old Betty Crocker cookbook (the BEST frosting ever). So I guess that's not really a memory but I'll also have to add that you did a WONDERFULL letter/frosting job for Grace's surprise birthday :)Now I know where you got all the experience ;)
I think one of my favorites was a 3-D girl with actual ringlets made out of fondant. Or maybe it was the bass fish I made, that was amazing and fun! I love doing the 3-D cakes, I hate sheet cakes.
I am totally impressed you made that cake.
I made my son a pirate cake once. The frosting melted off (blue) and it looked like waves on an ocean coming off the side. The kids thought it was great. One of the moms even called me to find out how I made it look so great with the waves. Ha Ha, I had to tell her it was a mistake.
You definitely have more talent that I do.
Happy New Year,
Julie
